I think he'd be sensational. It could be a huge comeback for him.

Who wants him back? His career is over.

There was a plan for Spacey to do it at the Old Vic and the rights were secured. Marianne Elliot has talked in many interviews about how when Spacey left the Vic and rights became available she pushed for NT to grab it.

Sure, and it can run in rep with A RAISIN IN THE SUN starring Bill Cosby.

Seems a little premature to be planning his comeback tour

Are you also looking forward to Harvey Weinstein's next film?

My thought exactly.

So, how about Kevin Spacey AS Harvey? That would be fitting, no? I'd love to see the specially designed make-up.

A meta event to end all meta events.

Funny, when I came out of "Boys in the Band," and was (very) disappointed in the Michael of Jim Parsons, it dawned on me who might've been definitive a decade or so ago. Spacey.

Spacey as Michael in THE BOYS IN THE BAND

I recently proposed this cast for a 1993 "25th Anniversary Production," at which time Spacey (and the other actors I name) would have been more age-appropriate. I restricted myself to gay/bi actors (no matter whether they were openly so at the time).

Michael: Kevin Spacey
Donald: Mitchell Anderson
Harold: Harvey Fierstein
Bernard: RuPaul Charles
Alan: David Marshall Grant
Emory: Jm J. Bullock
Hank: Peter Frechette
Larry: Mitchell Lichtenstein
Cowboy: Tuc Watkins

I love all of your casting ideas, but I think the idea of Harvey Fierstein as Harold (back in the day) is a really great one. He could have worked against his usual warm and fuzzy, lovable public personality and might have been brilliant in the role for that reason.

P.S. I saw Jm (or Jim) J. Bullock in WHEN PIGS FLY in L.A., and he was terrific onstage, so casting him as Emory back in the day sounds to me like another great idea.

Now for me, this sounds like perfect casting if the show were being done at Mr. Burt Reynolds' dinner theater!

I also think Fierstein would have been a disaster in the role. In everything I have seen him in, he not only asks to be loved, he demands it, come hell or high water. I think his insistence on it ruined the book for Catered Affair and his performance threw what could have been a nice, small show totally out of balance. I am a gay man, close enough to Fierstein's age, to have had some of the experiences of invisibility he was trying to address in that show, but it was so anachronistic--for better or for worse (and, I agree, almost always for worse), the uncle would have been expected to bring a female date to the wedding or might have been allowed to bring his "buddy," as long as they didn't insist on being recognized as the "same as" a married heterosexual couple. His anger felt post-Stonewall and simply served Fierstein's contemporary attitudes--which I share, but thought took us out of the period of the show.

He would have insisted on hugging Michael at the end.

What has he been up to? I will never forget seeing in onstage in BENT at the Coast Playhouse in LA probably during the late 80's? WOW!! What an actor!!
