Twelfth Night (Shakespeare in the Park) tonight

What a high energy fun musical. Loved Nikki James as Viola/Cesario, the older lady in the purple dress who had a lot of pizazz, the guy who was using sign language throughout the show, Malvolio and his predicaments, and the fast paced "dance" type song that came towards the end of the show (forgot the name of it, but it had a catchy refrain like Z100 or KTU would play). Loved the diverse cast (many from all different communities across NYC). Everyone was in perfect synchronization; this was certainly rehearsed very well. Minor quibble was that I couldn't understand the words of the little girl who spoke at the beginning and end; they sounded a bit garbled to me. They refer to a Red Ensemble and Blue Ensemble; it took me a while to figure out, but I think that only one of these two "Ensembles" plays each night. I have no idea if I saw the "Red Ensemble" of actors or the "Blue Ensemble" of actors. The main actors remain the same each night; it's only the larger ensemble of community actors that changes.

Started 8:20pm after a slight pause, then continued in light to moderate rain. Rain stopped approx 8:45pm and show let out just before 9:50pm. Theater was impressively at least 80% full. Everyone on staff (all ushers, staff before you entered, box office personnel) were extremely friendly. This is a perfect example of a show that wants to bring people together, raise them up, and leave a positive impression. As opposed to a show that wants to cause divisiveness and make fun of peoples' religion.

This show was so much more fun than the prior show at the Delacorte in May/June; that was a 3 hour bore. Hopefully these "Public Works" are done every year as part of the mainstage. They can compromise and every year have two shows: (1) one boring 3 hour show for those who want their "pure" Shakespeare, and (2) a fun 90 minute "Public Works" show with the community actors for those who like fun musicals that are fast-paced
