| Alan, I just referred to the memoir again about singing Eliza (above); her account was not fact checked, to be sure. | |

| Oh, you weren't overbearing, I just felt responsible for fact-checking and admittedly knew I was quoting a wonderful source but an unreliable narrator of the full history of "Camelot"'s development. She was writing from memory, and what remains intriguing is the way she recalls the experience. Time is not subjective of course, but I suppose a sense of time passing, while performing a long show/cut show, can be highly personal. I revisited the "Fair Lady" parts just now, after reading about Benanti doing 7 performances. Andrews' accounts of her vocal problems singing Eliza are very powerful, since it happened both in NY and again in London. Maybe I'm alone here, but I was surprised to read that she missed performances. Some of us tend to overplay our reverence for the stars of the past, who are touted for never missing. Eliza is never easy apparently (much discussion about the voice work with Higgens, etc., vs the singing), and maybe learning that the great Julie Andrews had recurring issues with the role is reassuring that the good old days were not that dissimilar. The human voice is a precious thing. Sidebar: I just watched a 2017 Colbert with Andrews watching herself sing Eliza on the same stage (Ed Sullivan Theater) in 1961. She grew teary, as did I. We can all imagine how hard it is for Andrews to watch herself sing, particularly that role from that time. |
