Let's keep in mind that the rules regarding taping for Broadcast etc are VASTLY different in the UK, as are costs for making a cast album. You are not confronted by union after union with their hands out for big bucks.
As one simple example, if you record a cast album of a new musical in the US, and your orchestrator received $75,000 for his work; then his fee for using his orchestrations on the cast album is - wait for it - $75,000.
On a recent Broadway musical, I was told by my GMS that the cost of recording the cast album would be $250-300,000. The cast album for a BIG musical in London that I worked one was made for $35,000. And the label paid 100% of the costs - except for the writing and copying of parts for 4 musicians we added for the cast album.
The differences are as vast for recording for Broadcast. That's why NT Live can exist. |
