But I think that's different - it's his show, he created it from scratch based on a character he developed for himself, starred in it and it is almost a solo show, made it a hit off-broadway, never was eligible for Tonys for it, made it into a fantastic film that has enjoyed cult status, and when the new Broadway opened on Broadway he again wouldn't be eligible for any awards. I think giving him a special Tony was very different and inspired by more than just as a replacement star.

Giving it to Benanti, or anyone else as a replacement would set a very bad precedent I think. And also since Ambrose didn't win, it's basically saying "you corrected what was wrong and now we're awarding that" ... it's almost like saying she shined so much more even because she did it better. And are they going to give a special Tony to every amazing replacement? And if they don't get it does it mean they weren't amazing? Also, it's a performance award for someone who isn't competing against anyone else for it, so not only does that make it a bit less fair, but it means they get a Tony handed to them for a role their predecessor had to compete against 4 people for (whether they won it or not for the role). It's pretty loaded, I'd say.

And if they did do a replacement category so people can compete, what happens when a show has multiple replacements? Is the rule "first replacement"? Or do they have to see them all? When Fantasia took over Color Purple she was the 3rd replacement I believe. And what happens if the nominee's run in the show is very short?
