| The Tonys should just follow what the Oliviers do in London. If the producers wish to put a replacement actor in contention for an award, they can do so (and provide all the comp tix, etc.) and that actor is eligible to be nominated or win in whatever the appropriate category would be. So, in this case, Benanti would be competing for Best Actress in a Musical alongside any other nominee from any other production in 2018-2019. Maybe she would be nominated or maybe she wouldn't and maybe she'd win or maybe she wouldn't, but it would depend on the field of competition and nominators/voters would be able to make the choice. |
