There's a logic to that... but I also don't think it's fair because the new actor isn't creating the role in that production... the staging and everything else about the way the show is formed and performed is not organic or adapted as much to them or how it all develops with them in rehearsal.
Also I don't think it's fair for actors in shows that opened new that season to compete with not only an actor in a great role that was already eligible for an award for the preceding actor in the previous season (and who was likely nominated or even won), but an actor giving a performance as a replacement that is so notable that it garnered a Replacement Tony nomination. That's quite a lot to compete with.
And how many Roxie and Velmas and Phantoms and Elphabas etc would be nominated year after year?
I think I'd prefer a Replacement category to that. |
