| In another post in this thread I brought up some issues with the Special Tony... but like the example of John Cameron Mitchell, I think the one they gave to Pearl Bailey is quite unique and likely to not have many equivalent people or situations to honor. The Tonys were honoring her performance as much as what it represented on Broadway, with her leading an all black cast for the first time in a hit musical theoretically written for and originated by a white cast. Obviously you know this, I just want to point out how different that is. There were many other wonderful Dolly replacements... Pearl getting a Tony doesn't diminish their performance because it wasn't just simply an award recognizing a fantastic Dolly replacement. |
