Glenn Close and Jonathan Pryce in The Wife: RUN, don't walk! (And a thought about their stage appearances)

Pryce and especially Close--in what, I hope, will finally bring her her Oscar (and should at least bring her her seventh nomination)--are BRILLIANT in the new film adaptation of Meg Wolitzer's novel. The film never quite rises to their level, but it's invigorating to watch two such seasoned actors at the top of their game. Separately, their skills are astounding; combined, it was so exciting, I felt like a teenage boy at Transformers.

As the credits rolled, I got to thinking how lucky New York audiences have been to see Close so frequently and in such a variety of roles...but Pryce has only appeared in four Broadway productions. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels closed over a decade ago, and he hasn't done a straight play on the Great White Way since 1984!!!!!! (To be clear, that's the year, not the play.) I hope he comes back to the boards soon, and, selfishly, having only seen him in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, I would love for it to be a juicy classical role.
