Here's How This Will Work

Benanti will be terrific, of course, and give this production a new energy that will be different than what Ambrose is giving and people who saw both will debate them for the rest of time.

Then, some future production of MFL on Broadway will star a well known leading man as Higgins and a 20 year old unknown discovered by the producers in an open call or in the ensemble of another show. The production will open in triumph and the leading lady will become an overnight star. Everyone who sees it will talk about how much of a revelation it is to actually have the role played by an age appropriate actress for a change and will wonder why anyone ever thought that casting 40 year old actresses in the role worked.

Debate will rage here on ATC amongst those who saw Ambrose and/or Benanti and all the arguments referencing Mrs. Patrick Campbell will be raised again.

Casual theatregoers won't care. They'll only want to make sure they see the overnight sensation and not the unknown alternate playing on Sunday afternoon or Tuesday evening.

A European director will have the idea to age all the characters up and portray an Eliza in her 50's getting one last chance at a life other than selling flowers on the streets of Covent Garden. It will also be hailed as brilliant, if a bit odd, and will have a short run and become legendary amongst those who saw it.
