Good morning! To me, there are some absolutes. MY FAIR LADY is a great musical. MOOSE MURDERS is a piece of crap. Not opinions, facts. Great shows, and terrible shows, are what they are. It's the ones in the middle we can argue over! That doesnt mean that one can't dislike MFL and love Moose Murders - it just doesnt change what they are. I love SOMETHINGS AFOOT, although I know that its not actually very good. I guess the difference between me and some folk on ATC is that I dont think a show is good (or great) just because I liked it. I loved THE BANDS VISIT and think its a terrific show. But I also understand completely the POV of the large number of attendees who loathe the show. And you are correct, and this summer is proof again, the only shows that get summer openings are shows that theatreowners are pretty sure will let the theatres go fairly soon. One could say - if one wanted to be cynical - is that the way to find out if you should abandon your show is to see if the Shuberts or Nederlaners or Jujamcyn will offer you a theatre for a June-July opening. If they do, walk away from that dream.

There are some exceptions that prove the rule - HAIRSPRAY being one - but the vast majority of summer opening shows that become hits were already hits in New York, and just moved uptown - like A CHORUS LINE and AVENUE Q.
