Bonnie Weiss, one of the brightest musical-theater experts I know, is leading ''The Man Who Put the Rainbow in 'The Wizard of Oz': A Tribute to Lyricist and Human Rights Activist Yip Harburg.'' It'll be held Tuesday, Aug. 28, from 1 to 3:30 p.m., S.F. State Downtown Campus, 835 Market St.
Created with a grant from the Yip Harburg Foundation, this one-day course will include rare footage of Yip performing and talking about his famous songs, as well as snippets of his home movies with his pals Ira Gershwin and Harold Arlen. Besides exploring his noted musicals, like ''Bloomer Girl'' and ''Finian's Rainbow,'' Bonnie also will discuss Yip's political activism and how he landed on the infamous Hollywood Blacklist.
(I first knew Bonnie many years ago, when we produced Sondheim tributes for Musical Theatre Lovers United in San Francisco.) |
