| ''The King and I'' and ''Miss Saigon'' are about the ONLY times you ever see any appreciable number of Asians on the same Broadway stage. KingSpeed, if you were Asian-American, you would understand just how limited Broadway opportunities are for these actors of color. I'm hoping the box office success of ''Crazy Rich Asians'' will exponentially expand the possibilities on-screen and onstage for them. And I don't just mean the inevitable musical adaptation of that movie. … With any luck, David Henry Hwang's ''Soft Power'' is on its way, too! P.S. Funny how this is a thread about Jonathan Pryce that has yet to mention his ''yellowface'' portrayal in ''Miss Saigon.'' During its original run, the best Engineer I've ever saw is Joseph Anthony Foronda. Too bad, he wasn't given the chance to originate it … and win a Tony. So far, no Asian-American man had ever won Leading Actor in a Musical. And as recently as last year, the brilliant Jon Jon Birones, in the latest revival, received a Theatre World Award and a Drama Desk nomination, but still couldn't get nominated at the Tonys. |
