I'd love to see Briones win a Tony, but I don't believe in gaming the system: like putting leading actors into supporting categories.

It's been established that the Engineer's role is Leading; Pryce won for it. … Awards are subjective. I believe that Briones should've been nominated for Leading Actor, and if he lost to Ben Platt, that's showbiz. (For the record, I've said before that I thought Andy Karl really deserved that Tony.)

Even if Briones had been bumped to Featured, I'm not even sure he would've won. Gavin Creel is a 3-time Tony nominee. ''Hello, Dolly!'' was one of the hugest hits of that season. AND his role IS supporting. Gavin's first Tony nomination came 15 years ago, and he might've been overdue to win.

Anyway, we need more than revivals of ''The King and I'' and ''Miss Saigon'' to supply opportunities for Asian-American actors.

It's ironic that Young Jean Lee just became the first female Asian-American writer to debut a Broadway play: ''Straight White Men.'' Lee has written about a dozen other plays, but this was the only one considered commercial enough for the Great White Way? The one with no Asians?

Again, I'm hoping the success of ''Crazy Rich Asians,'' a movie full of Asians, directed by an Asian and co-written by an Asian, based on a best seller by an Asian, helps prove that Asian stories CAN bring in an audience. And if you pick the right property, that could happen on Broadway, too.
