The mystery, for me, about Barbara Harris remains. This was a very ambitious actress. She was drawn to stardom. She even married Paul Sills. From accounts of the out-of-town ups-and-downs of ON A CLEAR DAY, she was steadfastly delightful. Then, somewhere during a particular performance of THE APPLE TREE, word leaked out that she had walked off the stage and left the theatre. A breakdown of sorts. Was it Earl Wilson’s column? And there were the rumors that she was depressed and or sedated on the night of the Tony Awards and the cause was attributed to Warren Beatty’s unexpected break-up with her. And, yes, sure, she had some very nice film opportunities, and it’s to be assumed she showed up on time with lines learnt for them.

It’s just so strange. She seemed born for the stage, and she seemed to revel in it. And it seemed things changed. Was THE APPLE TREE particularly exhausting or proscriptive? ON A CLEAR DAY was the show where the infamous Dr. Feelgood was taking care of Lerner with those amphetamine-laced vitamin shots. Did Dr Feelgood get to her?

Just such a mystery. Or did the film roles start to fizzle? And had THE APPLE TREE, brilliant though her performance was (it was! It was!), given her a reputation for being distressed or unreliable? I think I remember she may have been spoken of as Eliza for a MY FAIR LADY revival, but what else? Was there a career she walked out on? Roles she said no to?

Was it simply that she had to go back to Chicago to look after her mother? I remember hearing that, too. Anybody?
