| My partner and I have been taking some steps towards writing a musical based on a film from the 1960s. We decided not to go too far until we found information regarding the rights to the film. We are both new to writing musicals although we both have experience in our separate fields of writing and composing. I love the ideas we have been coming up with but so far it has been a struggle to obtain rights. After months of inquiries I finally found the company that holds at least some of the rights. This is the letter I finally received. "Thank you for your interest in our title. While our company does control at least some portion of the underlying rights for this picture, we have not looked into it specifically for stage exploitation, which would require extensive research. In light of the time that rights research takes for our older titles and our internal priorities, our research department does not undertake extensive research on any single property without the direct involvement and interest of our company in the project (e.g., serious interest of our company's senior creative/production execs) coupled with a bona fide licensing offer with specific and very attractive financial terms, including attachment of a first class producer." This note tells me that there is not another stage musical in the works. But what should my next step be? We could continue writing the musical and then try to get interest from a stage producer? I know my way around the film world but this is a new arena for me. I'm sure there might be other possibilities so I thought I'd put this out on this board and see what advice I might get. THANKS! |
