You have reached a conundrum that is very familiar to an awful lot of people who have tread the path you are on. Do you continue working on spec? or do you spend a large amount of money hoping (a) that you do indeed end up with the rights and (b) that it pays off in the end. The advice below is not wrong, but I'll tell you what you need: someone with muscle to fall in love with what you are doing. It's likely that "first class producer" your correspondent mentions, but failing that, an agent or a theatre company to whom you can tie your fortunes. Failing that, the only thing you can really do is write on spec, while your fingers are crossed. Good luck to you whatever you do.
