| What a fascinating telecast! I assume that Hayes just accidentally skipped Geraldine Page's name -- I'm surprised that the guy doing the voice-over didn't make some comment to acknowledge the error. There is another omission, however -- the awarding of Best Actor--Dramatic Star (Melvyn Douglas for The Best Man) is not on the tape. Other oddities, weird moments, or misstatements: Eddie Albert's embarassing leering at Cely Carrillo and Julie Newmar; Mary Martin reciting the lyrics of "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" when accepting her Tony; Vivien Leigh's reading of the Best Play's nominees (and winner) without including the names of the writers and producers (the voice-over guy does add the winning names of Gibson and Coe); Jason Robards refers to the film version of Destry Rides Again as a Gary Cooper movie (James Stewart played Destry); Robert Morse reads the nomination of Lauri Peters and the children without naming the 6 young actors (all other sources lists their names); after naming The Sound of Music as the co-Best Musical winner, Celeste Holm screws around congratulating and kissing the Fiorello! guys and doesn't name Music's producers and authors until they begin lining up on stage. I'm guessing that there was much time for rehearsal or run-throughs back in 1960. Anyway it's a great historical document, Wayman. Thanks for digging it up and posting it. |
