I was in a not-dissimilar situation with a non-musical property, and was given information that the original material was both definitively under copyright and definitively out of copyright.
An extensive and exhaustive search probably would have proven that the latter case was true, but it was an expense I didn't want to incur, given the possibility that I would have spent all that money for nothing. My sympathies. |
