Regarding The Sound of Music, the role of Liesl is a fairly large supporting one. Peters did get good reviews so the nomination seems justified. It's my guess that including the other 6 actors in the nomination was done more as a courtesy rather than an acknowledgement of merit plus their roles don't have much individuality. Neway (I believe) was a heavy favorite so there was little chance that Peters and the children (including 2 boys) would win a Tony for featured actress.
It would be nice if some day a tape of the 1959 Tony telecast surfaces. |
