yeah. really bad....and here's why I personally think so:

Start with the easy stuff: They decided to put the Zach/Cassie romance front and center, and, in doing so, made the theme of the movie about a romance between two narcissists.

WHAT I DID FOR LOVE becomes a song about what you do in a romantic relationship, rather than about a passion and a calling for your craft....

LET ME DANCE FOR YOU is inserted as a plea to a former lover rather than everything that the song it replaced (MUSIC AND THE MIRROR) represented.

The cast didn't seem to have that many authentic Broadway dancers, so-- while they all seemed quite talented-- I had a hard time believing that many of them were off the streets of New York.

The casting of a major movie star as Zach further tilted the show away from dance, dancers and the pursuit of the all-elusive job/shot/chance.

Oh, I could go on and on. Attenborough should never have been hired to direct this (he admitted as much). Maybe it never could work the same way it worked on stage. And maybe Fosse just did it better in his opening sequence of ALL THAT JAZZ, which is pretty much "A CHORUS LINE in 7 Minutes".

All that said, my younger family members and friends who were born well after the excitement of the original Broadway cast (and resulting phenomenon), seemed to have liked the movie a lot when they first saw it. Eventually, they get to see (or be part of) stage productions of the show and they come to me and go "NOW I get why you don't like the movie!". They still like the movie....but they know it's a different show. I just hate that people who have just seen the movie think they've already seen A CHORUS LINE.
