As per a couple of books about the creation of the show, the original idea was to have Robert LuPone as Zach choose different characters each time to get the job, based on who he felt had "earned" it at that performance. But that proved to be impossible logistically for the wardrobe department because they had to know who was being changed when for the quick change into the finale.
