I'll just throw this out there. When I first moved to NY with dreams of producing theatre, a respected producer with at least one very huge hit to his name told me to never get too far along the path without having the rights.
Could you ever write your show without basing it on the movie? If the movie is an obscure bomb then it seems safe to assume that you are not looking for big branding opportunities like so many of the recent film to stage adaptations. The example I am thinking of is Steel Pier. Kander and Ebb were unable to get the rights to They Shoot Horses, Don't They? So instead they wrote their own show. Both shows are about the world of dance marathons and share some common elements. But since they are based on actual historical events you can't really copyright those. Obviously the plots could not be identical. |
