| Wikipedia says Neil Simon is the playwright with the most Best Play Tony nominations with 10, just edging out August Wilson's 9. Tom Stoppard has won Best Play the most times (with 4), but Simon and 6 others come in second, each winning twice. The Variety obit says Simon's works brought ''an unsurpassed 50 Tony nominations to their actors.'' Simon was less celebrated for his work on the big and little screen, having lost his 4 bids for an Oscar and his 4 bids for an Emmy. He did, however, win 3 times for Best Comedy at the WGA and received their 1979 Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement. Pete Hammond of Deadline.com makes the case that Simon, who wrote about 25 screenplays, deserved much more respect. His 4 Oscar nods were for adapting ''The Odd Couple,'' ''The Sunshine Boys'' and ''California Suite''; ''The Goodbye Girl'' was an original. Hammond adds: ''For my money, one of the best comedy scripts of all time was 1972’s 'The Heartbreak Kid,' which wasn't even nominated.'' |
