| I found this to be a fantastic production (a beautiful Art Deco set by Harry Feiner; lovely period costumes by Andrea Varga) with a remarkable cast including the fabulous Mary Bacon, Larry Bull, Ted Deasy, Janie Brookshire, and Dan Daily under the superb direction of J.R. Sullivan. This is only Hellman's second play produced on Broadway, (THE CHILDREN'S HOUR with its rumors of lesbianism preceded it), and was followed by THE LITTLE FOXES, WATCH ON THE RHINE, TOYS IN THE ATTIC, and the book for the 1956 musical CANDIDE. Hellman was known for speaking her mind and pursuing questions of truth and deception, especially within families. This remarkable production by an absolutely top-rate cast is well worth your visit, and The Mint is to be commended for calling attention to these undiscovered gems from women playwrights. |
