| and I was terribly disappointed. The music was great, and there were two numbers in particular that really killed. But the book...my god, it was an Irish playwright's cliche of every depression-era type. I have always loved Conor McPherson's work but none of the interesting, deep characters, carefully constructed storytelling and slow build that I associate with his writing was here --instead very obvious "types" led into songs about their situations (for instance, there is a boxer on the run from the law, get it?). I am wondering if reviews will be slightly less rapturous here. After all, the Olivier went to Enron for best play one year, another time that I thought "Wow, this play is so obvious and stereotyped and over the top" but my British friends loved it. Then it closed after 8 performances (as I recall) on Broadway. | |
