| Many, many years ago, I was in Lehman Engel’s class at BMI. There was a fellow in the class who was in love with King of Hearts but was having a problem securing the rights. And I must say, the score was beautiful. He wrote the whole show. Peter Link flew to Paris and got the rights, leaving Lehman’s student out in the cold with a beautiful score and no hope of getting it produced. He committed suicide. A tragic story, but take heed. Don’t ever write a musical before securing the rights and avoid heartbreak. |
