Harry Potter...the show, the production and the theater...longish

I saw HP pt 1 and 2 on Sunday. While I'm not a huge HP fan, I did see most of the movies and thought the play did a great job of weaving the past into this play. Did it need Part 1 and 2? In my opinion, no. The second act of part 2 felt like it was struggling to tie all the pieces together and stretch into a second act. It became somewhat convoluted and contrived.

The actors are uniformly excellent with true standout performances from Anthony Boyle as Scorpius Malfoy and Sam Clemmett as Albus Potter. Both are excellent. Especially with Boyle, you genuinely feel like you are seeing the start of a great actor's career with the potential of a huge trajectory.

My post is more about the production. Its mind blowing! Its an enormous effort and probably more so than any show (certainly any play) ever on Broadway. Its more than an event. It changes the game and advances the art form. It literally left me speechless. I was constantly saying "how did they do that?" I'm also amazed at how the two plays move- the actors, the sets, the lighting, the props, the costumes, the actors ability to remember two full shows...all of it is absolutely staggering. To say nothing of the cost to stand the show up or to run it on a weekly basis!

The original Lyric and New Apollo theaters were torn down to create this theater. The larger architectural highlights (mostly the proscenium...boxes and other parts) were removed from the original Lyric and later incorporated into this theater. The new Lyric (aka Ford, Hilton, Foxwood) has been completely renovated for this production. The renovation is not just repainting. Its down to the entire theater being "Potterized". The stenciling on the walls is new, all of the carpeting has the H on it....the auditorium seating is new and has been restructured to extend the seating around the balcony. More like you might find in an opera house, the façade on the balconies and the ceiling have all been changed and "Potterized".

This renovation includes the removal of two huge comedy/tragedy masks that were in the ceiling of the main lobby. This along with all of the other "original" details has mostly left the original Lyric details a memory. I hope that when (if ever) Harry moves on the original acrtechural detail is returned. Its truly a shame to loose it.
