A different example - I am vehemently turned off by Adam Sandler's work. I have never seen The Wedding Singer (the film) because of that, and I will likely never watch it because of that. Case closed. Don't try to argue that with me, lol. (And sorry, Adam.)

For a long time I avoided getting to know the musical version of The Wedding Singer, because I just didn't want to associate with anything that had to do with Sandler, even in terms of source material - even though he has nothing to do with the musical. Silly, I know - but that's how I felt. But, because some of the songs were becoming very popular with my musical theatre students, and I'd be coaching them, I realized I had to get familiar with the musical. I still have yet to see a production of it, but I would if the opportunity arose. I've come to realize the score is quite fun.

But I don't expect I would never be able to sit through the film.

A musical adaptation of a film (or any other source, for that matter) should be a separate entity. It shouldn't require knowing the film, it shouldn't require liking the film, and it shouldn't mean that you have to like the musical if you do like the film. The musical should work on its own terms.
