Shouldn't Gaylord and Julie in SHOW BOAT have Southern accents?

Gaylord introduces himself as "Gaylord Ravenal, of the Tennessee Ravenals," while Julie is introduced as "The Sweetheart of the South." Yet, in nearly all productions I've seen, they have neutral accents.
What's up with that? I mean, just sayin'.
