Harmonia Gardens closing night
Posted by: Drew288 01:01 am EDT 08/28/18

A twitter poster claimed that the Harmonia Gardens entrance applause on closing nights of the three Dollys were 75 seconds for Peters, 58 seconds for Murphy and 32 seconds for Midler (because she went on, effectively cutting it off).

I find this fascinating. Do these numbers sound right to folks who were at some (or all) of these performances? I assume that this is Midler’s SECOND closing night that is being referenced in the tweet.

I can only say I was stunned by how long the entrance applause (meaning that moment she drops the newspaper & reveals herself to the audience) was for Peters; it was rapturous and went on and on and on. I'd seen her numerous times on Broadway, specifically in Sunday in the Park, Song & Dance, Into The Woods, Gypsy, Night Music and Follies, but I've never seen an audience go quite that MAD for her. And it continued throughout the show; her Harmonia Gardens entrance applause was lengthy, but I believe that first moment went on even longer.

Maybe it was due to the fact she was beginning her last week in the show...? Whatever the case, it was the kind of applause I'd expect for Barbra Streisand or Hugh Jackman.

People who love to know and delight in such things.

Have you seen "The Lisbon Traviata" or has heard about trainspotting? Some people love the details.

LOL, well I guess there must be many more real life Mendy's in the world than I thought. ( and where i live, most of the time, there is not much rain though quite a few trains).
It just never occurred to me to track the timing of applause during a performance. My loss.

I guess all I can say is , though I do not profess to be an expert on the subject, there was no shocking lack of satin in terms of audience enthusiasm for Midler's and Peter's final march down those stairs. :)

Some delight and others have an obsession--LOL.

I know a fan who'd seen this production 17 times--seeing each "Dolly" multiple times.

I saw this production 17 times! (Bette x10, Donna x2, Bernadette x5)

Worth every penny (no longer in my pocket)

I was there this past Saturday, may have even been less than that. Everyone stood up en masse of course when she started down the stairs and while many were cheering thinking it would come to a full stop at that point, but she kept walking and started in on the song. People quickly realized it, and took their seats, at least where I was. To me it wasn't any different than the two other times I saw Midler.

To be honest, I think there was longer applause for when the waiter first comes screaming into the restaurant to announce her impending arrival.

Yes, that was my experience, too. I think my that time Bette had received so many standing O's that this one was expected and not particularly worth stopping the show for, unlike the ovation at her first entrance. I appreciated that she cut it short and went into the number, which she knew, of course, would end with yet another ovation.

I think it can be a tricky situation. I also tend to think that most actors would rather go on with the show as much as is possible - despite enjoying the accolades, and despite knowing that sometimes the audience needs to have that kind of release. Applause after songs is a given, but "entrance applause" etc can be much trickier.

I think it can also be an awkward thing for an actor to have to stand there in that situation and keep the illusion of the moment going. Some actors are better at that (or more willing to go there) than others. Seems to me that Midler has been quite comfortable breaking the 4th wall - but you're probably right that she may have just felt that enough was enough.
