... was a misquote of what the BBC said - He was the first living playwright to have a theatre named in his honor. The Coronet was renamed the O'Neill in 1959, after his death. And of course there is the Sondheim, anmed after him while he is living,. The Richard Rodgers was named posthumously, as was the Gershwin.

The earlier theatres named after people who were writers (and also producers, directors, or actors) included the George M Cohan Theatre, The Lew Fields Theatre, The (David) Belasco, The John Golden, The (George) Broadhurst, the (Oliver) Morosco - well. these were named by owners and leaseholders, after themselves!
