I think it can be a tricky situation. I also tend to think that most actors would rather go on with the show as much as is possible - despite enjoying the accolades, and despite knowing that sometimes the audience needs to have that kind of release. Applause after songs is a given, but "entrance applause" etc can be much trickier.
I think it can also be an awkward thing for an actor to have to stand there in that situation and keep the illusion of the moment going. Some actors are better at that (or more willing to go there) than others. Seems to me that Midler has been quite comfortable breaking the 4th wall - but you're probably right that she may have just felt that enough was enough. |
