So a singing and dancing "Mrs. Doubtfire" is also on its way; with "Tootsie," an embarrassment of drag tales?

The new musical will be written by "Something Rotten!" co-creators John O’Farrell, Karey Kirkpatrick, and Wayne Kirkpatrick and directed by Jerry Zaks.

Two shows about heterosexual men turning to drag for other than identity-establishing purposes*, though perhaps they'll be spaced by development on "Doubfire."

Maybe they'll be wonderful, both.

I remember "Sugar," and how much it was anticipated. And I enjoyed it, at age 20.

*shorthanding here; a big complicated subject -- why people express themselves via another gender -- not necessarily right for a theater board. This is a general enough category, since both stories are about straight men who self-identify thus.

And to think, you can see "Mrs. Doubtfire" and "Tootsie" back to back on a matinee day. n/m

I love me some BDJ, but I think he's wrong for this. The part really truly needs a comedian, and he is just not that funny. Not in what we've seen in his career so far, and I'm not sure they should risk a big budget musical on giving him the chance to prove he is really funny.

We have different ideas of funny, it would seem. Being IN a comedy (including ones that aren't especially funny) isn't the same as being funny. He's surely not without the ability to play comedy, but I don't think that's the bar they need to pull off a musical of Mrs. Doubtfire.

I was thinking along the lines of Rob McClure or Michael Urie as Daniel/Euphegenia. I think McClure would be almost perfect, although Urie would be considered a bigger draw and might be funnier.

Time for a revival of Where's Charley, perhaps? ;-)

Obviously, I see the "drag" connection, but I'm not sure what you meant beyond it.

Similar to casa Valentina with straight men dressed in drag. I found lola to be asexual instead of either straight or gay or trans.

I think it's made very clear that Simon, aka Lola, is a straight man. The "What A Woman Wants" sequence in Act II helps to define this, IMO.

Yes that is what Harvey has said was his intention but Tony winner Billy Porter said he played the role as a gay man

...but Tony winner Billy Porter said he played the role as a gay man.

Fine for him as long as it was something that Mitchell and Fierstein in particular were ok with.

The idea that Porter's interpretation is the law of the land is another issue altogether, lol. Just like any other actor in any other role. ;-)
