| Fascinating article, although I read it speedily. But in answer to the question in the subject line, Why not? Hawke played Kilroy in a Williamstown production of Camino Real in 1999, so he has been inside it, and he must have had the play on his mind for almost 20 years. It's bizarre that the Times didn't mention that essential bit of information. The production, by the way, was from an era when Williamstown staged great classics with star casts, something the current administration there has abandoned in favor of chasing commercial new works that can transfer to New York. Hawke's costars included Richard Easton, Blair Brown, Hope Davis, Kristine Nielsen, Daniel Sunjata, Jimmi Simpson, Christian Camargo, and Lewis Black--yes, that Lewis Black. | |

| Ethan Hawke was astonishing in the Williamstown production of Camino Real. I hadn’t paid much attention to him before I saw it, but I’ve watched most everything he’s done since, almost always with great admiration. First Reformed is a stunning film with an Oscar-worthy performance by Hawke. Camino Real is such a difficult play to pull off, and he and his talented co-stars brought it to life. It’s thrilling that he wants to direct a film adaptation. He understands Camino. Nobody better to make it work on film. |

| That's a great cast. I saw a nice production of it at Juliard around twenty years ago. It's a good example of Tennessee Williams being an outright post-war surrealist. The theme of the artist who has run dry but finds inspiration at the end is a theme Wiliams would return to over and over again. |
