Where do we dim the lights for this?

And it couldn't happen at a worse time in history.

I wonder what happens to the Obies? Let's hope someone can keep them alive, somehow.

The lights in our brains will be dimmed automatically by its absence.

I've loved the Voice for almost 50 years. In the 1970s and '80s and '90s I never missed an issue--even though I lived nowhere near New York. (The paper had a large fan base in the San Francisco Bay Area too.) And I read every issue almost from cover to cover--all the wonderful theater coverage, of course (thank you, Michael Feingold et al.), but also all the rest of the arts coverage, the politics, even the local New York City politics (which, of course, have a way of developing into national politics). And what would life have been without my weekly doses of Feiffer, Stan Mack, and my all-time favorite, Mark Alan Stamaty's McDoodle Street?

RIP, VV.

Good question about the Obies. Maybe Michael Feingold, who sometimes posts here, will pop up and lend his voice to the latest news.

The OBIES should cease in my opinion. Cultural movements live and die.

can you clarify? You consider the Obies a "cultural movement"? What does that mean in this context?

The Voice, Wednesdays, the iconic and ever eccentric back page. When I moved to NYC, the Voice was one of my first friends, for no logical reason. I ate many a lunch, reading it. RIP. A sad day indeed.

The Voice was always around to weigh in with an opinion or review.

I fully understand the sentiment you're expressing but perhaps it is important to say that the reason is not content (or politics) per se but the demographics of the readership of that content. The typical Voice reader enjoys the explosion of content (whether culture, progressive politics, or anything else) whereas the typical Enquirer reader does not. As I have noted on other occasions, for the person interested in media related to the theatre, the amount of content available (and readily so) is greater than at any time in history.
