No, but I did see her at 54 Below a couple of weeks ago.

Though I'd never seen her perform in a concert or cabaret format, because I think so highly of her work in book musicals, I had high expectations--and she managed to exceed them. The specificity and originality of her work was enthralling. She made me hear songs that I've heard countless times (like Another Hundred People and Ring Them Bells) as if I were listening to them for the first time. She displayed an incredible range as an actress. Qualities that people have said her work lacks--like warmth and vulnerability--were on ample display, as was her signature dry wit and intelligence. Highlights included a devastating version of Tom Waits's "Martha"; a rendition of "The Bilbao Song" that, per Bebe, recreated Roger Rees direction from "Here Lies Jenny" (I wish I'd seen it); her disturbingly neurotic (in all the right ways) take on "Another Hundred People"; a hilarious "Ring Them Bells" that was so uniquely hers that I stopped hearing all of the Liza line-readings I know so well; and a deeply touching and beautifully danced "It Only Happens When I Dance With You" that I interpreted as a gorgeous tribute to Fosse.

Watching her, I was reminded of something I've heard Liza Minnelli in a number of interviews: that when she approaches a song, she (Liza) imagines it as a short film, and very specifically envisions all of the characters, her costumes, the set, etc. Bebe seems to have thought out her selections just as vividly.

If you ever have the chance to see her solo show, I cannot recommend it enough.

(PS: I just reread this, and feel a bit embarrassed by all the effusive adjectives and adverbs...but I'm LEAVING them in because they really capture how I felt about that evening!)
