She just did a beautiful “Danny Boy” at the McCain funeral.

From CNN

"I'm so incredibly touched that he asked for this and that he asked for me to sing it. I'm very moved by that," Fleming told CNN in an interview.

Fleming is starring in "Carousel" on Broadway, and missing a performance is no small thing. She had to get permission from the producer, Scott Rudin.

"It is a big deal, actually, and typically it would be denied for almost anything, because our commitment is to the Broadway theater and to the audience in NY. But Scott Rudin immediately said, 'Yes, of course you must go,' " Fleming said.

She was speaking earlier on CNN about getting permission from Scott Rudin to miss work to be able to sing at the McCain funeral. She didn’t mention whether she would be back in this evening - does anybody know?

DC isn't that far away. I suspect she'll be back.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if she's on tonight. Also, both in context of the show itself and certainly in the context of Fleming's career, Nettie is not a taxing role. If she were slated to do Rosenkavalier tonight instead, she might have understandably bowed out. But I don't think she'd be fazed by one time through Carousel.

Btw - that "Danny Boy" was very moving and beautiful.

I’ve heard from two sources, one who saw both, that Fleming’s understudy is astoundingly good.

I’ve heard from two sources, one who saw both, that Fleming’s understudy is astoundingly good.

I know this has been discussed out here before - but in my experiences, the vast majority of understudies are excellent. They have to be - both because they know full well that they have an expectation to fulfill for disappointed audience members, but also, in terms of their own craft, they have to work that much harder to maintain the role, since they don't get to do it every night and aren't given huge amounts of rehearsal time. Their job is to be able to go on at a moment's notice - which in many ways is much harder than simply knowing that you're doing the role 8 times a week.

BTW - I'm also friends with the woman understudying both Julie and Carrie, who has gone on for both. (Both roles have 2 understudies, but my friend is the only one doing both.) I regret so much that I haven't seen her in the roles, but all reports are that she is quite amazing too. Which doesn't surprise me in the least. ;-)

Keeping a role in your head when you don't play it nightly.

I've known several actors who have made this their (good, if stressful) living; I know the understudy for a major role in a major revival of an Albee play. He had to go on for the star, after never have played the part with the full company. I cannot possibly imagine that task, intellectually or otherwise. It's a special skill, and temperament, and to say that not everyone can do it is an understatement.

"I cannot possibly imagine that task, intellectually or otherwise."

Of course it varies somewhat from play to pay and role to role, but generally speaking, I absolutely agree with you. ESPECIALLY in cases where the understudy is not normally in the show in another role, and therefore doesn't even get to hear the lines read by someone else night after night.
