Of course, Tony nominations are 9 months away, but there won't be a paucity of candidates for Best Book.

Besides ''Gettin' the Band Back Together,'' there's ''Head Over Heels,'' ''Pretty Woman,'' ''King Kong,'' ''The Prom,'' ''The Cher Show,'' ''Ain't Too Proud'' and ''Tootsie.'' And who knows what else is transferring from Off-Broadway or out of town? Or from ''Hadestown''?

Having seen Pretty Woman and the second act of The Cher Show, I wouldn't view those as strong contenders for Best Book of a Musical.

Having seen ''Head Over Heels,'' I doubt that'll be a strong contender too, but I wasn't evaluating those shows' books in the Tony race.

Only pointing out that there will be a number of candidates. As you know, the Tonys have struggled in some years to fill the category.

And there are even years where they flat-out gave the Book to one show (''Sunset Boulevard'') or ditched the category altogether.

I'd wager we'll see Hadestown, Be More Chill, Dave, and possibly Beetlejuice on Broadway before the end of the season.
