Luckily, got a chance to see the Bay Street production of EVITA tonight. I've never been to this Sag Harbor jewel, and I certainly wasn't expecting to see a stunningly good approach to EVITA in an intimate theatre space. We're visiting friends in the Hamptons and they had secured tickets. I'd seen the original production-- LuPone and Patinkin and Gunton-- and at least one revival and national tour, but the show doesn't seem to get done that much (if at all) in smaller venues. So I was dubious about this one.

I'll just say that director Will Pomerantz did a wonderful job reimagining the show, and sacrificed none of the power and impact of the material. It was thrilling. I don't have my program available so I can't name the incredible creative team and cast, but it made me appreciate the show in a new way. And the band that accompanied the production was wonderful-- the score sounded better to me than in any other version.

I hope others will take this on-- I think inventive directors and musicians can do wonders with this show and deliver something more spectacular without all the spectacle.
