Not to hijack the thread from someone who clearly has a much more important story to tell, but I had a Theresa Rebeck
experience I simply never forgot. It was a reading of a new script, I was maybe twenty or so, and I had been reading Theresa's
plays for weeks on end, and really wanted to meet my current literary muse. Well, at this reading --there she was--
surrounded by a group of people who were hanging on her every word. They laughed loudly among themselves
at each of the three attempts I made to approach. There was no penetrating this group to talk to her for a minute, they
were clearly her chosen protection from the hoi polloi like me. It was like the high school Group where you approach
at your peril.
It was so awful. I realized then that her angry plays were organically the product of that type of personality. I vowed when they do my pieces, I will
always put myself in a position at my shows where individuals have an opportunity to say hello, if necessary--yes, they can be annoying, yes, sometimes
they miss the point of your show or cause you grief as an author, but I always want to be in a place where I am available for a minute to people my work has touched in some
way --you never know where you were an agent of change that someone feels an urgent need to recognize. (or NOT:!!:) I will never be that cynical
that I wouldn't have a moment for the people who came to see those plays and plunked down money to buy those books. It was just awful and I'm shuddering right now.

NOW BACK TO REAL IMPORTANT STUFF...

She is under no obligation to talk to you or any fan

Her job is to write material for others to perform. That is it. She doesnt have to be nice to anyone especially fans. It is wrong to assume that is part of the job description for a writer or actor. She is not a telemarketer or flight attendant where being cordial to the public is part of the job description.

It is called "being polite". I don't know WHO she is....and now I'm glad.

She can stay the fuck home then, or else develop a reputation as a nasty ****. Personally, I don't care either way.

No. It is not part of her JOB DESCRIPTION to be "nice to anyone especially fans." She may not be a telemarketer or flight attendant but she is a god-damn human being, yes? And as such it is part of her "JOB DESCRIPTION" to be, at the very least, NICE. I have no idea what she did or did not do in this particular instance. But neither do you. Given our mutual lack of knowledge let us concentrate on your statement that "she doesn't have to nice to anyone especially fan." First of all she does have to be nice to everyone. It's what we as humans owe each other, Especially fans? Why the hell not be nice to fans?

"Why the hell not be nice to fans?"

At the very least, it's a good economic choice. Every writer is ultimately a salesperson.

If you read her book, Free FIre Zone, you would realize that Ms. Rebeck has constantly been under attack from small minded people with limited imagination who do not understand the deep reality that informs her work.

She was not deliberately rude to you. She was merely protecting herself against the insulting attention she expected from you (since that seems to be most of what she gets...according to the book).

I'm presuming this is said with tongue firmly planted in cheek. I've heard a story from someone who thought they had a perfectly respectable conversation with Rebeck in which they expressed admiration for her work, only to hear later that she felt terribly offended by them. This may be an issue with how she perceives other people.

As for the person who started this thread - there's really no reason that you should change your opinion of Ms. Rebeck if she did something awful to you, though I do question the tactic of putting out a very vague suggestion of bad behavior without any further information.

I haven't exactly kept up with her more recent writing. I think it's interesting that she feels insulted instead of meeting it with humor, or...

I 've seen how out of five people sitting in a row at a show, one loved it, one hated it, one slept, and ONE PERSON'S WORLD WILL NEVER BE THE SAME. Oh, and the last guy thought he just saw Equus. Something about a horse.
He left his hearing aid at home. That's the nature of the game.

Thank you for your input about her book. This is such a lauded, effective, successful writer, who really blazed a trail for women, and is commercially so successful as well, yet her actions are defensive and bitter.
There's a real lesson there.

The unconscious self revelation in her memoir is really astonishing. I had always thought the stories about her were exaggerated until reading her own version of them.

An anonymous attack because she talks to her friends - perhaps unaware of a "penetrating" stranger - does seem small-minded, so perhaps she has a point...And who can say anything about the post that started this thread? - as if those are the only choices...

I met THeresa somewhat recently through a friend - i was always on the fence, loved some plays, didn’t care for others, but On the personal front I’ve found her genuinely good humored and super intelligent. And she’s been a rest friend to our mutual buddy. Just good company. she took a lot of crap for decades and I get the sense theres a sort of ptsd. Some of the stories I’ve heard are really insane and I’m sure I’d be far worse off if I had weathered some of the crap she’s gone through. Haven’t seen B/H yet but was planning on going in a couple weeks after they get through previews. I did LOVE seared at WIlliamstown theater this summer - anyone catch that?

I saw Seared on what seemed to be some sort of opening night. Theater was packed with overly-enthusiastic guests which I found irritating.
I saw four shows that weekend (Lempicka, The Waves at Vassar, and Moulin Rouge in Boston), and that one was my only disappointment. I didn't think the play had anything to say.

I'm 0 for 3 with her plays (I didn't care for Mauritius or Seminar), but, even though I didn't renew my Roundabout subscription, I bought a cheap ticket to this.

The play by Rybeck I’ve enjoyed the most is The Understudy. But Smash almost ruined my life by watching it.

There were things I loved...the staging is very inventive and has a definite movie feel to it. I would see almost anything Rebecca Chavkin directed...I thought her version of The Royale was excellent and while there are things I didn't love about Natasha, the staging is an event.

I thought the story was pretty fascinating (although according to what I've read on wiki, like most historical shows, lots is left out and lots is exaggerated.) She certainly led an interesting life...and happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time in both Russia and Europe.

There are three former-Elphabas...so that tells you the nature of a lot of the music. I really liked the orchestrations, but then they started getting a little too similar.

I sat second row....way too close. It's a show that definitely needs to be seen from a few rows back or front mezz. The people in the first row were really struggling because the lighting was bleeding into the front of the audience.

...coincidentally, one of my bosses and his wife (relatively avid theatergoers in their 70s) were there the same week, and he called me after to recommend it.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first season of SMASH, which I believe Rebeck was responsible for.

The second season...not so much.
