Not to hijack the thread from someone who clearly has a much more important story to tell, but I had a Theresa Rebeck
experience I simply never forgot. It was a reading of a new script, I was maybe twenty or so, and I had been reading Theresa's
plays for weeks on end, and really wanted to meet my current literary muse. Well, at this reading --there she was--
surrounded by a group of people who were hanging on her every word. They laughed loudly among themselves
at each of the three attempts I made to approach. There was no penetrating this group to talk to her for a minute, they
were clearly her chosen protection from the hoi polloi like me. It was like the high school Group where you approach
at your peril.
It was so awful. I realized then that her angry plays were organically the product of that type of personality. I vowed when they do my pieces, I will
always put myself in a position at my shows where individuals have an opportunity to say hello, if necessary--yes, they can be annoying, yes, sometimes
they miss the point of your show or cause you grief as an author, but I always want to be in a place where I am available for a minute to people my work has touched in some
way --you never know where you were an agent of change that someone feels an urgent need to recognize. (or NOT:!!:) I will never be that cynical
that I wouldn't have a moment for the people who came to see those plays and plunked down money to buy those books. It was just awful and I'm shuddering right now.

NOW BACK TO REAL IMPORTANT STUFF...
