COLLECTIVE RAGE: A PLAY IN 5 BETTIES
Posted by: workerbee 01:34 pm EDT 09/03/18

It is so dispiriting when an important subscription theater programs a play like this. I mean, I would love to see a play with queer female content and women of color characters that spoke with some depth and complexity to those experiences. But this play displays weird cardboard cut-outs of those kinds of human beings, to really no end. The actors work hard, but only some of them can handle any of the changes. And once again MCC offers a cheesy set on its potential filled stage. Why not let the real people speak for themselves, instead of these facsimile works. Reminds me of that play last season that pretended to be about disagreements between young women of color and older white feminists- a great subject- but the play did not understand the actual issues at hand and put up superficial substitutes, fake discourse far less interesting and absent of meaning. It's like the programmers at MCC want feminist, queer, and POC, but only sometimes and other time not really. Let the people speak!
