I'm so sad about the burning of the Brazilian National Museum in Rio

Even though I've never been, the thought of all that history, that artwork, the crafts and relics of hundreds and thousands of years just gone in a flash really makes me angry and sad as a person and as an artist. It's as though our Metropolitan Museum, or something on the order of the Louvre, etc. has been forever lost. I don't know if this was arson or some terrible accident, but my condolences to the Brazilian people. This isn't directly theater-related, but as theater artists go to museums to study history and art, science, design, portraits, costumes, etc., I'd say it is still relevant.

I had not heard about this, so thank you for posting about it. Horrible. And yes, I think it is absolutely relevant. We've been mourning the loss of so many actors and other theatre professionals recently, but obviously this is no less affecting.

I have a Brazilian-born student in my college musical theatre program - when school starts up next week, I will ask him if he ever had the chance to visit this museum.

I've only been in Rio once - and went to this museum, only to find museum workers on strike. A missed opportunity. Very sad indeed.

Officials said the blaze may have been caused by a paper balloon propelled by a small flame that may have landed on the museum’s roof. Such balloons are illegal, but are commonly launched during celebrations across Brazil. Investigators were also exploring whether a short circuit in a laboratory may have been the culprit.
