Just finished reading this wonderful new book. I had thought it would be along the lines of Alec Wilder's American Popular Song, analyzing the songs themselves/The subtitle , how show tunes enchanted America, describes the book well. It tells how the songs made their way into America's living room (and now earpieces). From sheet music to radio to 78s then Lps, cdS and downloading. It is absolutely fascinating and, like that line from THE PRODUCERS, it's just loaded with historical goodies. People have commented on the vocalizing of the Diana Devereaux of the 50's revival of OF THEE I SING( the footnote say she was the producer's girlfriend p.224).There is also an amazing statement concerning a conversation the author had with conductor John McGlinn #23 p.231. Also the author seems to love gatefold covers as do I apparently, they were also called K covers. Book is highly recommended
