One year after the killing of Heather Heyer at the Charlottesville riots, the world is a different place. A new devised theater piece opening October 12th (previews begin October 10th) at The Tank , VANDALS, developed over the course of last year, charts our national mood and the crisis of public monuments.

You may know the VANDALS as the tribe responsible for whacking off all the noses and penises from the Roman statues at the Met. VANDALS adapts a public trial of a war hero/criminal into a founding myth for democracy. It explores the personal histories of the cast to unearth the question, “What do you need to change about the past in order to live in the present?”

“There’s a debate underway in America,” says co-director Will Hand, “about whether or not words and images can be themselves violent...I wanted to provide a framework for us all to approach this question, ‘how much can we stomach of the past, and what do we have to change to live in today’s America?’ I see this idea being hashed out in a very public way, in museums, in universities, and in theaters.”

VANDALS runs October 9th-25th at The Tank, 312 W 36th St NY NY. www.thetanknyc.org Tickets are $15 online atwww.thetanknyc.org More info at www.thehow.nyc/vandals Featuring: Ilker Oztop, Weronika H. Wozniak, Tanya Chattman, Linus Ignatius and David Glover.

THE HOW (Will Hand and Polina Ionina) are radical cross-disciplinary upstarts who want New York’s theater to be as international, virtuosic, and diverse as the people who live in it. The How runs monthly concerts showcasing experimental music, theater and dance in Brooklyn, and regularly premieres original works.

THE TANK is a Manhattan-based multi-disciplinary arts presenter and producer. Their mission is to remove economic barriers from the creation of new work by artists launching their careers and experimenting within their art form. Their goal is to do this in an environment that is inclusive and accessible to all. The heart of their services is providing free performance space, and they also offer a suite of other resources such as free rehearsal space, artist fees, and promotional support. They keep ticket prices affordable and view their work as democratic, opening up both the creation and attendance of the arts to all.
Under the leadership of Co-Artistic Directors Rosalind Grush and Meghan Finn, in September of 2017, the THE TANK moved to their new home in the Theater Building at 312 W 36th Street where they took full control over two theaters: a 98-seat proscenium and a 56-seat blackbox theater. They anticipate that this year we will serve over 2,000 artists presenting 800 performances by emerging artists from throughout the five boroughs.
