It's my understanding the original production of Chicago closed in the red in Aug., '77 but eventually recouped as the result of national tours. Suskin confirmed it had recouped in More Opening Nights and the Burns Mantle series said the same. Apparently the profit was very small. In fact Kander was quoted in Colored Lights as saying "It wasn't really a hit. It never paid back." Subsequently, though, I've been told something like Kander really meant to say that the show's eventual profit was so small that it was not worth considering.

Over the years I've heard Barbara Walters claim that the '75 production was a shocking failure and I also heard Robert Osborne say something similar. However, I doubt that either of them were knowledgeable enough in Broadway economics to know what they were talking about.

Robert Osborne was a great guy, but he sure said wrong stuff sometimes, as have other TCM hosts. I would guess that the TCM writing staff has been at least partly responsible.

A friend of mine who knew him well also told me he was a great guy. I think his knowledge about movies was pretty strong, but when he got into talking about the stage origin of various films, he frequently made errors that made me shake my head. Nevertheless, I liked the job he did on TCM -- he was a fine interviewer.

Yeah, I really liked him, too, but there were times when I wished I could have contacted him to say, nicely, "Hey, the next time that movie's shown, you may want to adjust what you said a bit." Nowadays the hosts even got some basic movie stuff wrong.
