New York magazine profiles Lucas Hedges, the young Oscar-nominated actor from ''Manchester by the Sea.''

Besides ''Manchester,'' he appeared last year in two other Best Picture nominees: ''Lady Bird'' and ''Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri.'' This fall, he has three films coming out: ''Boy Erased,'' ''Mid90s'' and ''Ben Is Back.'' Plus, he's making his Broadway debut in Kenneth Lonergan's ''The Waverly Gallery,'' which begins previews on Sept. 25 and opens Oct. 25 with Elaine May, Joan Allen and Michael Cera at the Golden.

In the profile, Hedges opens up about his many neuroses and fears he's the worst part of every movie he makes.

He also gets personal about playing a teenager who's sent to gay conversion therapy in ''Boy Erased.'' Realizing that the film's topic will prompt questions about his own sexuality, Hedges says he's ''not totally straight, but also not gay and not necessarily bisexual.”

Ugh. "Not totally straight." Even in 2018, guys can't just admit they're gay and be fine with that??? What's wrong with the word "gay" that he seems so against it? What's the matter with kids today?

I'm around a lot of young people, having four teen and 20 something daughters. Many young men and women aren't comfortable with being characterized as "straight" or "gay" - there's a fluidity to it that I've never seen before. What he said resonated with what I'm hearing from a lot of young people. He may not be "against" being gay, but just doesn't identify himself that way.

Yes, it is a trend nowadays and I don't like it at all. If you are only attracted to men, you're gay, get over it. If you like both men and women, you are bi. Deal with it.

They are still kids. I'd say it's a hopeful, progressive sign of openness that kids are talking about these feelings around their friends' mothers...:)

Even if he was gay, he's probably all too aware that if he publicly comes out, there's a real chance he won't get cast in certain film roles.

Some producers and directors are still very nervous about that.

I don't personally care about any actor's sexuality, or private life in general for that matter. I'm more interested in their work. But I understand that there are those who are obsessed with celebrity lives and that their sexuality can (sadly) affect their careers.

Lucas is one of the main reasons I eagerly purchased a ticket to THE WAVERLY GALLERY; I think he's one of the very best young actors working today.

The only reason gays have any rights are because people came out of the closet. So it matters. Being a movie star who comes out of the closet helps the cause and sends a message to young men in the closet, especially young actors, that it is okay for them to be themselves. Staying in the closet is selfish. In my opinion.
