And though no Trump supporter, she tried to make the case that if Brandon Dixon can speak to Mike Pence across footlights, and DeNiro can curse a president, this is just the same thing. The resulting discussion among acquaintances was heated, but my point was simpler: Carrying a sign touting this president's re-election in a family show on B'way is much closer to shouting "Fire!" than any first amendment protection. This was genuinely scary, in no small part due to the zealotry that the size of the sign suggests. It wasn't like a church fan with "Trump!" on it. That's a big effing flag.
This has nothing whatsoever to do with free speech. |
