| In yesterday's New York Times, there was an article, with many photographs, of all the vacant store fronts all over NYC. Although the center of Times Square remains one of the few highly desirable locations for retail, I am still confused why it was decided to raise the Palace theater in order to place a large retail space at ground level. Just thinking about the complex engineering task, and the millions it will cost makes my teeth hurt! |

| With new construction having storefronts that are vacant. It doesnt make a lot of sense where on line retail is replacing brick and mortar stores. Im surprised they arent adding a narrow tower on 47th street side since they probably could add a base under the theater now. | |

| The point is that in places like Times Square brick and mortar is doing robust business. Re the tower idea, I'm pretty sure they don't have the air rights. | |

| As you say the empty storefronts aren't in Times Square. It does seem like a bizarre plan but it's better than the other potential other move which would be closing the Palace. | |

| I am not a fan or proponent of this project, but people have been investing heavily in complex and cockamamie tasks since time immemorial. There would be no Palace Theatre to raise (or raze) had Ferdinand and Isabella not invested in Columbus. | |

| Although the center of Times Square remains one of the few highly desirable locations for retail... I think you've answered your own question there. (Also, *Cain. The hotheaded guy from the Bible.) |
